Stanislav Robert Kucera, one of the most prominent experts in Chinese history, Chief Researcher of the China Department of the Institute of Historical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, was born on May 5, 1928 in Lviv, Poland. In 1947, after graduating from the lyceum, he entered the Institute of Oriental Studies of the University of Warsaw (Instytut Orientalistyczny Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego), from which he graduated in 1952, having defended the work "Fundamentals of Taoist Philosophy" under the guidance of a major Polish orientalist Witold Jabloriski and received a master's degree in Philosophy in the field of Oriental studies. From 1951 to early 1953, he worked as an assistant at the University of Warsaw.
In February 1953, S. Kucher was sent to China for postgraduate studies at Peking University, where in 1960, being the only one among foreign students, he defended his thesis under the guidance of a corresponding member. AN of the People's Republic of China Zhang Zhenglang wrote a dissertation in Chinese on the topic " The class structure of ancient Chinese society based on the materials of "Zhou Li"", and the defense aroused great interest of Chinese scientists. From March 1958 to October 1959, he worked as a teacher, then head of the Department of Polish Language and Culture at the Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages.
Returning to Warsaw in December 1960, S. Kucera was for some time a scholarship holder of the Ministry of Higher Education of Poland, and from April 1961 he worked at the Polish Institute of International Relations (Polski Instytut Spraw Miedzynarodowych) as an adjunct.
In August 1966, after moving to Moscow, since April 1967, at the invitation of Academician N. I. Konrad, he has been working as a researcher at the Institute of Asian Peoples of the USSR Academy of Sciences (later - the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences). In 1981, he defended his doctoral dissertation on " Chinese Archaeology 1965-1974: Paleolithic-Yin Era. Findings and problems". From 1988 to 2002, he held the position of Professor of the Department of the Ancient World, Faculty of History, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and taught at the Russian State University for the Humanities.
S. Kucera is a member of the Russian Archaeological Society, in 1993 he was elected a member of the People's Academy of Russia, in 1998 he became an Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.
S. Kucera participated in a number of international conferences: XXII, XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXVII, XXVIII Congresses of sinological studies, XXIX, XXX and XXXVII Congresses of Orientalists, XIV Pacific Scientific Congress, Congress of the International Association for the Study of Central Asian Cultures, and a symposium on the problems of Western culture at the University of California (Los Angeles).
In 1988 and 1989, during his trips to Beijing, he delivered two scientific reports at Peking University and People's University of China. In May 1993, S. Kucera delivered a course of four lectures for graduate students of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, followed by two scientific reports in the Republic of China on Taiwan.
From October 1995 to March 1996, he was invited to work as a researcher at Academia Sinica (Taiwan). During this period, he read six scientific reports, including at the University of Singapore. A significant number of reports were read by him at various times in scientific institutions in Poland.
Stanislav Kucera is such a rare, especially in our country, type of brilliant European polymath who always closely follows what is happening in world science. In an almost unbelievable way, he manages to combine the best traditions of Western, Russian and Chinese classical Sinology in his scientific work, preserving and multiplying them. His research is distinguished by thoroughness, attention to detail, rigor of logical constructions and clear presentation of thoughts.
S. Kucera's research interests are characterized by an almost incredible breadth of coverage for modern science, he is the author of nine monographs (including four co-authors), more than 300 articles and reviews. His writings on Chinese archaeology (especially " Chinese Archaeology: 1965-1974. Paleolithic-Yin Epoch", Moscow, 1977) are the most complete sources of information in this field in Russian, works on the Chinese Paleolithic (first of all, "The Oldest and Ancient History of China", Moscow, 1996) have no equal in completeness in world historiography. S. Kucher is the largest Russian expert on Yin culture. He wrote a number of extremely valuable studies on the social and political life of the Zhou era, prepared for publication the first part of the translation of the unique ancient Chinese source "Zhou Li" (the only translation of this text - into French - was published in 1851). To this, it should be added that S. Kucheroy wrote a number of important works on the social and political life of the Zhou era. He has written numerous articles on the historical, cultural, and legal problems of ancient and medieval China, and is Russia's leading specialist in the history of foreign Sinology.
Despite his busy schedule, S. Kucera always finds time and energy to pass on his knowledge to students, his teaching gift is in no way inferior to his huge gift as a scientist. The sections he wrote in university textbooks are " The History of the Ancient East. Texts and documents" (Moscow, 2002); " Historiography of the history of the Ancient East. Iran, Central Asia, India, China" (St. Petersburg, 2002); "History of the Ancient East" (Moscow, 2007) - successfully combine accessibility and the highest scientific level of presentation of the material. S. Kuchery's lectures are also distinguished by the same qualities. They are always strictly logically structured and extremely informative, guiding the student to independently analyze the material and draw conclusions. At the same time With. Kucera, despite the long experience of teaching, which many people have a tendency to a certain automatism in presenting information that is repeated from year to year, each time carefully prepares for the lecture, trying to find new data or even more illustrative examples. It is not an exaggeration to say that each lecture with. Coachmen is a bright scientific report, carefully prepared and read without any discounts on the age or qualifications of the audience, but at the same time extremely accessible and fascinating.
Everyone who knows S. Kucera appreciates his great sense of humor, responsiveness, rare decency, integrity and intelligence. It is difficult to find another person who embodies so fully all the best that can be in a scientist, teacher and friend.
The China Department congratulates Stanislav Kucera on his anniversary and wishes him many years of fruitful scientific work, health and vigor.
