On July 15, 2008, a good, friendly, talented person passed away, who was persistent in adversity and did not take credit for success. And perhaps most importantly, Igor Alexandrovich managed to happily and fruitfully combine the talent of a scientist with practical activities in the field of Oriental studies, or rather, Vietnamese studies, to which he was devoted almost all his life: from the first year of the history department of Moscow State University to its last days.
During his university years, he became a student of Academician A. A. Huber and one of the first qualified domestic specialists in Vietnam and experts in what was not studied in our country until the 50s of the XX century. the language. Igor Alexandrovich worked in Vietnam as both a translator and a high-ranking diplomat, for many years he was an employee of the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPSU, involved in the "kitchen" of Soviet-Vietnamese relations in all their complexity and variability, and, finally, was an Oriental scholar who wrote at the dawn of his career (he began his career as a junior as a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences), a very good book about the Taishon people's uprising in the last third of the XVIII century is almost the first full - fledged historical study in Russian Vietnamese studies.
Vietnam became not just the main interest in Igor Alexandrovich's life, but his affection and great never-ending love. At various stages of his life, he retained an attitude towards Vietnam that was not that of an outsider, but that of a man who devoted himself to the country and remained true to his choice. The charming, precisely charming article (later it became a chapter in the last book of I. A. Ognetov "In the Vietnamese direction")" And in the Vietnamese language there are six tones...", published in the magazine" Vostok (Oriens)", is written with love and some nostalgia for youth, with humor that has always distinguished the author... Articles and pamphlets about events in Vietnam in the 60s - 70s of the XX century, decorated with personal impressions

from traveling and living in the country... And finally, the result of my thoughts is a great book and recent articles...
Igor Alexandrovich turned to the analysis of the" Vietnam miracle " - the unification of the country in the context of the clash of geopolitical interests of great powers and ideological differences between the leaders of the USSR and China. He set out to understand why, out of the divided countries of the East that existed at that time, only Vietnam was able to resolve the issue of reunification, and on a socialist basis. And among many factors, he highlighted the following: since the division of the country in the XIX century, the national movement, no matter what political force led it, always combined two aspects-independence and integrity of the country's territory.
Igor Alexandrovich met and made friends with many Vietnamese people of different levels and positions. He always remembered two of them with special warmth and reverence. The first is President Ho Chi Minh, who impressed the young Igor with his democracy, great tact, insight and memory. Another was PTV's general secretary, Le Duan, a staunch communist who laid the foundations for Vietnam's current success. Both in conversations and in his writings, I. A. Ognetov always evaluated this person according to his deeds and personal impressions, without distorting the truth in the name of momentary conjuncture.
Igor Alexandrovich - both as a scientist and as a practitioner-could not, of course, remain indifferent to the problem of Soviet/Russian-Vietnamese relations. In his last book, he did not conceal anything and spoke honestly about the misunderstanding of Vietnamese realities in the International Department of the CPSU Central Committee in Moscow and Soviet institutions in Hanoi, about the difficult relations with the Vietnamese leadership during the years of aggravation of Soviet-Chinese relations. He came to the conclusion long ago: the Vietnamese leadership did not have a serious pro - Soviet or pro-Chinese position, but only a pro-Vietnamese one.
In conclusion of his book - the result of many years of activity - I. A. Ognetov wrote: "Over the decades of cooperation, thousands, tens of thousands of soul threads have emerged that connect Vietnamese and lienso [Soviet] people-from top managers to the most ordinary employees, students, and students. These fine threads have collectively become a huge spiritual force."
Reflecting on the past and assessing the present, realizing that it is absurd to approach relations between our countries with the standards of a bygone era, Igor Alexandrovich, always wisely regretting Russia's hasty rejection of the Cam Ranh naval base and wondering why the Vietnamese delegation was not invited to the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Victory, with some sadness, but also with I thought hopefully: "Isn't this a sign that the spiritual power that united our peoples is also drying up? It's a pity if this is the case, because sooner or later life will force us to look into each other's eyes."
A true patriot of the Fatherland, to whom he gave all his remarkable talent as a diplomat and scientist, has passed away.
