Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, State Prize Winner (1990), Chief Researcher of the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences Boris Lvovich Riftin turned 70 years old. Riftin is a well-known expert on Chinese folklore and literature in China.
He is the author of the first monograph on Chinese folklore in our country ("Tales of the Great Wall and the problem of genre in Chinese folklore", Moscow, 1961), which immediately aroused the interest of scientists from different countries, as evidenced by reviews that appeared not only in Russia, but also in China, Czechoslovakia, Italy and other countries. Started in the 1950s, the research direction of Chinese folk culture has become the main one in the scientific biography of the scientist. His second monumental work, " The Historical Epic and Folklore Tradition in China "(Moscow, 1970), was published in Shanghai in 1997 in Chinese translation and, despite almost 30 years that have passed since the appearance of the Russian edition, immediately attracted the attention of researchers of the Chinese novel and folk culture. It was distinguished not only by the abundance of material collected, but also by a fundamentally new research method (for example, the structure of a Chinese prose tale, the question of epic motifs in Chinese legends, novels and dramas, etc.). For the first time in science, B. L. Riftin raised the question of the evolution of portraiture of characters. His book " From Myth to Novel. The evolution of character Portrayals in Chinese literature "(Moscow, 1979), which also attracted responses abroad.
In general, the study of Chinese mythology since the 1960s has become one of the main areas of work of the scientist. Under his editorship and with his additions, a Russian translation of Yuan Ke's book "Myths of Ancient China" (1965, expanded edition 1987, and a new expanded edition is being prepared) was published, and he also owns more than a hundred articles in " Myths of the Peoples of the World"and separate studies of the main images of ancient Chinese mythology.
In 1992, B. L. Riftin was invited by Tsinghua University to Taiwan to deliver a course of lectures on Chinese folklore and lead the scientific program "Collecting and comparative study of Aboriginal folklore in Taiwan". The result of this seven-year fieldwork was a book published in Taichung in 1998, From Tales of the Gods to Tales of Evil Spirits. A comparative study of the myths and fairy tales of the aborigines of Taiwan". Beijing scientists became interested in it, and in 2001 the second expanded edition of this book was published by the publishing house of the Academy of Social Sciences of the People's Republic of China. Riftin's collected folklore texts of the Bunun and Sadek peoples are being prepared for publication in Taiwan.
Another area of work of the scientist is the survey of Chinese collections of libraries in Russia and other countries to identify unique manuscripts and rare editions of ancient Chinese novels, dramas and works of popular literature. Starting this work in 1962, the scientist immediately discovered in LO YIWAN a unique list of the earliest version of the most famous Chinese novel "Dream in the Red Chamber" (XVIII century), which was brought to Russia in 1832 by a student P. Kurlyandtsev. The discovery aroused great interest among specialists from different countries, and in 1986 a facsimile edition of this manuscript in six volumes was published in Beijing. The unique collections of Chinese dramas discovered by B. L. Riftin in Denmark and Austria were also published in Shanghai in 1993, and in 1997 in Taipei in 10 volumes was published. Lenin's unknown Chinese novel of the early Hush century. "Tu wan Yan "("Maybe so, maybe not so"), after which its pirated reprints appeared in Beijing and the study of this interesting everyday novel began. Currently, the scientist is preparing a detailed description of ancient manuscripts and rare editions of works of Chinese literature that he discovered in 10 countries of Europe and Asia (Russia, England, Germany, Denmark, Holland, Austria, Sweden, Czech Republic, Vietnam and Mongolia).
In parallel with the search for rare editions, B. L. Riftin is engaged in the study of ancient translations of Chinese novels and novels. He is also interested in the history of Russian sinology. Under the editorship of B. L. Riftin, a three-volume collected works of V. M. Alekseev is currently being prepared for publication. One more topic of Riftin's scientific activity is connected with the legacy of V. M. Alekseev and the continuation of his work - the collection and research of Chinese folk paintings (nianhua). In 1990, a large colorful album "Rare Chinese Folk Paintings from Soviet collections", compiled by him together with Chinese scientists, was published in Beijing.-
page 200
It includes works discovered by B. L. Riftin in our museums that were not preserved in China itself (the album was published in Chinese and in Russian as two independent editions), and now the scientist is working on a monograph "The Chinese Novel and Folk Art".
If you look at the published list of works of the scientist for the last 10 years,it is not difficult to see that most of the works (and this is not only translations, but also research) are published in the PRC and Taiwan in Chinese. This indicates that the works of a Russian scholar who tries to apply the methods of Russian philology to the study of Chinese material invariably find readers in China itself and other countries (many of his works are translated in Japan and Vietnam).
